Most people will find the most difficult challenge in their life in their last days on earth. Tom faced his biggest challenge over 55 years ago. Death was easy by comparison. Tom saw things that man was never meant to see. He witnessed atrocities so horrible they cannot be described. He saw the results of profound evil. He saw good people die as well as the not so good. He looked into the heart of darkness and peered over the abyss. While those around him died in the prime of their life he saw himself spared for inexplicable reasons.

Yet Tom faced life with dignity and humor. He rarely showed anger. His kind smile greeted both great and small. I met Tom 23 years ago and as the years passed I saw him face each challenge with grace and style. The bible says God does not test any man more than he is capable of. Tom must have had incredible faith. Farewell my good friend.
