Security and Warnings
I forgot my password (someone else set my password)
Your computer has password-protected certificates for your user name. You cannot set a new password unless you know your existing password.
If someone set up your account for you, obtain your password from that person.
If you forget your password
If you forget your password, you cannot access your certificates or decrypt new or saved messages. Your certificate issuer cannot give you a replacement certificate, so you must obtain new certificates.

Suggestions:
If your password doesn't work, make sure that you have not pressed the Caps Lock key. Let your correspondents know that they may need to resend important information.

Why can't I encrypt a message or add my digital signature?
You cannot encrypt or digitally sign messages on any computer but the one to which your certificates were issued. If you are using a different computer, contact your certificate issuer and obtain a new certificate for that computer. Alternatively, you can use export and import certificate features, available through the Security Info window. Check your address list. You cannot encrypt your message if even one recipient has failed to distribute a valid certificate. Check your own certificates and update them with their signers. You cannot add your digital signature unless you have a valid certificate. Update recipient certificates. To update certificates collected from others, use the Certificates panel. Under Certificates, click people. You can also use the Signers panel to update your recipients' certificates. Your recipients may all have valid certificates but may not have distributed them recently. Signers can update all certificates of the types they distribute, and do so upon request.

Why can't I forward a decrypted message?
If you attempt to forward a decrypted message without first encrypting it, Messenger reminds you to encrypt it.

Why can't I decrypt a message or page?
You cannot decrypt messages on any computer but the one to which your certificates were issued. If you are using another computer, contact your certificate issuer and obtain a new certificate for the computer you are now using. To decrypt the page, you must use your original computer, or use the certificate export and import features of the Security Info window. Update your personal certificate. If you are using the computer to which your expired certificate was issued, contact the certificate issuer. Then you can regenerate a valid private key and after that decrypt the web page.

What does Possible Message Tampering mean?
You see warnings about message tampering only when an incoming message has been altered in some way after it was sent. Alteration of the original message content can mean corruption due to mishandling or interception and forgery.

Suggestions:
Return the tampered message to its sender. Tell the sender you are having problems with his or her encrypted or signed messages.

Contact your system administrator or help desk. Report the incident and inquire about established procedures.

What do I do when I see a Java download alert?
A signed Java applet is not downloaded until you approve a security certificate that identifies the sender. Signed JavaScript is also not executed without your approval. You are also asked for approval if the JavaScript or a Java applet appears to compromise security.

The alert allows you to choose one of these options:
View Certificate: Allows you to view the details of the digital certificate, including information about the individual or organization distributing the Java applet or JavaScript.

Details: Gives you more information about the request. Select the action from the list and click Details. The Java Security Target Details Dialog Box will appear.

Grant: Grants the specific access for one Communicator session. To grant this access again for the same distributor, check "Remember this decision" before you click Grant.

Deny: Denies the access, and the Java applet or JavaScript is not downloaded.
